HRI exists to "do projects" - i.e. to make things happen; whether they be for profit or for altruistic purposes - people with ideas often find it diffcult to organizer and enable the things they things they feel are important. HRI exists to assist those initial steps of getting the plan together, finding the people, finding the funding and taking it past Gate "0".
Because the range of projects is so great, the fact that the Internet allows us to work with teams of people from all over the world enables HRI to bring togther people from everywhere to work togther - in English for the time being, but eventually in a wider range of languages.
The basic division of projects is between those that are for profit versus those that are non-profit projects. However, the process and products are often quite similar and so what applies to one may well apply to the other, except perhaps for the paranoia surrounding Intellectual Property.
For-Profit Projects
- Internal for-profit HRI series projects are only kept within HRI until the Project Owner can organize, incorporate and fund whatever new commercial entity will carry on as the project's "deliverable" -at which point they become external projects - where HRI's involvement is on a contract basis if at all.
- External projects.
It will be a while before HRI (as itself) is able to take on external contracts - but its freelancing members do it all the time - for a living.
Non Profit Projects
- Internal HRI projects
there are currently two several posted "internal" HRI projects including
hri05k is the project to build HRI itself, including the marketing and membership drive.
hri07e is the project to develop and maintain the information systems that HRI needs to operate.
<more being posted as the project manager gets around to it>
A Note about why HRI prefers "for-profit" projects;
- namely: people who are organizing "free" projects often don't appreciate the value of the volunteers time beyond what it costs them - ie.e nothing. So its ok to waste it with bad planning and no preparation.
There's a section of this this video that explains it quite well.
- External projects
It will be a while before HRI (as itself) is able to take on external non-profit projects - and its freelancing members tend not to work for free; they have to pay the rent too. If you want a hard working volunteer labourer who will allow you to waste their time for no remuneration or even a little appreciation - ask your Mom.
Projects at HRI are conducted under the guidance of SIG:PM (Project Management) and use the pm series of CDID's for their structure and procedures. New projects are numbered and registered by the SIGmaster for SIG:PM.
